I believe the author has presented significant ideas about the story of The Lion King but I don't agree with her suggestions of what certain colors or characters represent. Lazarus seems to focus on the social and political aspects of this harmless and simple movie. Her accusation of Disney's attempt at a metaphor of society is not accurate. She talks about the hyenas and how ominous and gloomy their habitat is. She refers to it as the "ghetto". My argument is that not every "ghetto" is ominous and gloomy as she says it is. Personally I have not lived in the "ghetto" but I am friends with people who were in areas similar to what Lazarus was talking about. The difference is that these areas are not as dark and depressing as she portrays but they neighborhoods where love and creativity thrive. Disney did not put things this way to make things more realistic, they just presented the African countryside in its natural way.
             If a person leaves this movie with the idea that this is what society is like then they are really mistaken. The "bigoted' images that our author is referring to will not be lodged in children's heads like she suspects. I saw the movie when I was younger and my little brothers as well. I believe that no harm was done to me or them mentally. I speculate that before the movie she spoke to her children about what she thought the movie was about and what it should represent.
             "Only those born into privilege can bring about change" is a statement that I believe that is totally false. We're all of the soldiers we sent over in every single American war/battle born with privilege? Was Martin Luther King Jr. or Malcolm X born into privilege? Just by these two examples her statement is completely false. Yes in some aspects it does help to be born into privilege but not always.
