named the Amish. About 100 Amish families came to America in the next 30 years and settled in Pennsylvania. The Amish who chose to stay in Europe joined Mennonite congregations. Currently, the Amish are found in more than 20 states and 1 province of Canada. The largest populations are in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania (Sheftel 1997).
             During the 19th century, the Amish community had to deal with some controversy and experienced some internal divisions. The terms Old Order Amish and Amish Mennonite came to be used to distinguish between the conservative Amish and the progressive Amish, respectively. This paper will focus on the Old Order Amish, from baptism to funerals, as well as other religious customs.
             Each September, Old Order Amish church districts baptize young men and women, usually between the ages of 18 and 20. Baptism is very significant because it means that the young adult is choosing to commit him or herself to the Amish way of life. Usually, teenagers are allowed to adventure outside of the Amish community and taste a few of the modern world conveniences and entertainments. 75%-80% of those raised in the faith remain in it as adults, which is why baptism is so significant. Baptism takes place during a Sunday service. It is a solemn ceremony, in which they promise to embrace Jesus and reject the world outside of the Amish faith.
             A baptism service lasts about four hours, beginning with two sermons. The bishop then asks each candidate a few questions in regards to obedience and faith in God to which they answer "yes". There is then a prayer with the congregation.
