How Sept. 11th Affected Me

September 11, 2001 may not have affected my life as largely as some people but that day did change my life for 3 months. It started off just like any usual day; I woke up and went to my calculus and chemistry class in the morning. I then decided to head over to the dorm and talk to some of my friends and that is were I heard the horrible news that the Twin Towers and Pentagon have been hit with commercial air planes. It was truly an act of terrorism. The very first thing that came into my mind was my father. He was in the active army for 10 years and now has over 12 years in the Iowa National Guard. I grown up my entire life knowing that my dad could get called out in 72 hours so I tried frantically to get a hold of him but he wouldn't answer his cell phone. After several tries I called home thinking may be some one was there who new what was going on, but no one was home. Then I tried my mother's cell phone. She answered and I asked her if she knew what was going on. She didn't even know about what was going on so she got really worried. She told me she would call my father's work and get through to him that way and then she would have him call me or she would call me back. Well about 20 minutes after I hung up with her she called back saying that he was getting called to his unit but he didn't know what for. So for the next 72 hours we didn't know if my father was getting sent overseas, staying in the US, or even if was going to be doing anything at all. We finally found out that he would be spending the next 3 Months guarding the airport in Waterloo, IA but he also told us that he volunteered to go over to Afghanistan if they need people. I was glad he was going to be in IA but I was waiting for that phone call saying that he would be gone for 6 months.
