Cinderella

             When considering the fairy tale "Cinderella" and the film Pretty Woman, one can conclude the main theme of the two is taking life by the horns and doing whatever is necessary in order to succeed. Both girls are considerably motivated individuals who go beyond the norm to get themselves out of unfortunate dilemmas. It should also be noted that neither girl complains about their lives. They just accept the situation they are in and do their best to better themselves. Luck is certainly on their side; however it is their genuine personalities that really lead them out of their holes. They possess a certain indescribable trait that allows the viewer to easily fall in love with them. Because they are young ordinary girls who are presented with a rough path, viewers can easily relate to them. It is easy for the viewer to compare the lives they lead to that of the characters. To help the viewer better understand their experiences in collaboration with these stories, I propose we introduce them into our English 102 curriculum.
             The tale of "Cinderella" portrays a young naive girl as what one would label a modern day "housemaid." Cinderella's mother passed away when she was a small child, and inevitably her father re-married the typical "evil" stepmother (Perrault 6). Along with her stepmother came pompous and incredibly unruly stepsisters who made Cinderella's life miserable by making her their slave. This poor "housemaid" was never permitted to participate in any of the family activities, and she was also forbidden to attend any of the parties her sisters were invited to. Cinderella had virtually no friends and was not allowed to communicate with anyone outside of the house. She was always made to feel secluded and unwanted.
