However it is probably more important for the government to keep the media on side. Many politicians constantly vie for media support as they understand how they are presented in the media can promote or ruin their careers, especially if corrupt behaviour gets exposed. As Chomsky (1988) states again in his propaganda model, governments hire those who speak against them in order for them to be silenced.
             In most countries the government relies on the media. This is because it is a means for them to set their agendas. Some even use it as a form of propaganda. The media is used to gain political advantage against oppositions or simply to further the needs of their parties. Governments are concerned with making sure their policies are understood and supported. The power of the media to influence the public can ensure this support. Therefore many governments have state owned media that act as a mouthpiece for them. For example, following the terrorist attacks, CNN was instrumental in assuring to America and the western world that America had done nothing wrong. Everything broadcast was from an American perspective and there was no coverage as to what America could have done to provoke such an attack. As some would say America's foreign policies were to blame.
             But governments also work closely with the media conglomerates in order to push their own agendas through media that are not state owned. "Ownership of private media has passed largely into the hands of big business." (Curran, Morley, & Walkerdine, 1996, p.139).
