h the 'evolution' of Metallica, dynamic usage changed quite a bit. In their early beginnings, all they were was loud, very loud with screaming guitars and shouting vocalist But this was a very early phase and Metallica soon grew out of it. Although loud a lot of the time, Metallica can be very subdued with some beautiful, soft ballads. With the albums 'Load' and 'Reload', Metallica's use of dynamics was extensive, with almost the almost whole plethora of rock styles contained on the albums.
             The vocalist commonly uses large swells in his melodies. He also places melodic and rhythmical influences on specific lyrics that he wants to 'charge'.
             The drums often use the double-kick to drum the rhythm of the melodies. The drums also often play tom-tom fills from the highest to lowest tom to get a cascading effect.
             The vocalist is a tenor but this may be just for the practical use of being heard above the other low instruments. His vocal style is slightly raspy but not to an extent as to detract a sense of pitch. To add a different colour, the vocalist sometimes doubles his voice (through overdubbing) or gives his voice a slight flange.
             The guitars are (usually) very loud and quite distorted with a definite crunch overdrive, which has a deep bass. To help achieve this sound the guitarists equip their guitar with high output pick-ups to attenuate overdrive harmonic frequencies that normally can't be heard without distortion.
             Double octave necks are used to get ultra-high notes during the solos as they can be heard easier over the rest of the band. Many different electronic effects are used including wah-wahs, talkboxes (which imitate vowel sounds), flangers and chorus pedals.
