Ironies in Trifles

"Trifles is a very interesting play to read. There are many symbols in the play, written by
Susan Glaspell. Four particular ones come to mind when I think of "Trifles".
The overall play was about a woman driven to kill her husband. One of the symbols is
the way she kills him. Mrs. Peter said, " It must have been done awful crafty and still".
Mrs. Wright was very crafty in her quilting and knotting. Then there is the bird that was killed by
his neck being rung just as Mr. Wright was killed by a rope around his neck that was knotted
very well. Mrs. Hale went on to say " She used to sing real pretty to herself". The bird, which
most likely sang to her, was there to replace the silence of her husband, basically to keep her
company until he killed the bird. This was most likely the motive for Mrs. Wright to kill him in
such a similar way. Last, knotting the rope resembles the ladies bond they had, because it was
like a knot itself, they were sticking together no matter what.
The symbols tell the readers a lot about Mr. and Mrs. Wright and their relationship. Each
of the symbols is what makes this play so interesting. It makes you want to keep reading hoping
to find more of them so you can get a greater understanding of just what kind of relationship the Wright's had.
