¤ THE IMPACT OF TYRES ON THE ENVIRONMENT
Ø Tyres play a very significant role in today's world. Life is not steady today. We highly depend on tyres for our daily needs. We use them in traveling from one place to another and also in carrying goods from one place to another by motor vehicle. It's very hard to imagine a life without tyres nowadays. The demand for tyres is going on increasing at a very high rate because of the increasing demand of vehicles. There are more than 121 million of tyres in Great Britain itself and is increasing day by day. There is a continuous increment even in our traveling distance each day. As a result, the life of tyres lowers day by day.
Ø Energy Use – A very huge amount of renewable as well as non-renewable energy source is consumed manufacturing each tyre. Besides energy it consumes in production, each car tyre requires about six liters of oil. Energy efficiency depends on the pressure of tyres and a properly inflated tyre is the major requirement for fuel efficiency and also does that increase the life. Energy consumption can be greatly reduced by using energy-efficient tyres.
Ø Tyres are most responsible for the noise from car if traveling at a speed of just 50 kph (30 mph). The volume of noise depends on the surface it moves and the surrounding volume of traffic.
Ø Almost each element is going to demolish slowly and gradually as it is used. After some time of use, tyres gets worn out and as a result releases small parts of rubber while in movement and thus pollutes the environment.
¤ Some facts about worn out tyres:
Ø About 40 million car and lorry tyres become useless every year in the UK. There is a brief data available about how are the tyres treated when they reach end of their lives. In 1999, the major disposal routes for some 427,000 tonnes of used tyres were:
