Have you ever wanted to do something so much and yet, you are restricted because of responsibilities that you held. This is true for Tom Wingfield in THE GLASS MENAGERIE, written by Tennessee Williams. The protagonist, Tom, wants to escape his life and job to explore the world. He cannot fulfill his dreams because of his family, and the duties he most complete.
             Tom wants to seek adventure in his life but is confined within his job and mother's bounds. "I go to the movies because – I like adventure. Adventure is something I don't have much of," Tom stated. Tom works at a shoe factory, and does the same thing repeatedly all day long. Working at a shoe factory doesn't allow Tom to do what he wants, to satisfy his adventurous needs. "You're going to listen, and no more insolence from you! I'm at the end of my patience!" his mom bellowed. Tom's mom is very controlling over Tom, even though Tom is in his early twenties. Also his mom and sister depend on Tom for financial aid. Tom can't leave, or his family would not have any incoming revenue.
             Tom is restricted from traveling and doing what he wants because of his family needs. Tom is a responsible guy, and doesn't want leave his mom and sister without some sort of income. Tom has to make a choice, which many people decide in today's society have to make. It comes down to each person, and the situation the individual's in.
