What is poverty exactly? Poverty is not having any food to eat, can't see a physician when you're sick, very limited education-many can't even read or write, and living in unsanitary places. Poverty doesn't just effect one gender or national or race, but it's a worldwide crisis. Although poverty has dropped in East Asia and improving in Southeast Asia, it is a major problem in Europe, central Asia, and the sub-Sahara in Africa. The seriousness of this problem is great and there are many people and organizations trying to help people who are living in poverty around the world.
             The number of people living in poverty is astronomical. According the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), there are about 1.2 billion people living below the one dollar a day consumption level (poverty line) and about 2. 8 billion people are living below the two dollar a day consumption level. Of the people living in poverty, 72 percent are women. With the world population expected to rise in the next 25 years, more people are going to be living in poverty.
             While there has been great progress in alleviating poverty, there are regional differences when it comes to improvements. Poverty is rising rapidly in Europe and Central Asia, and continuing to rise in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Asia, where most of the world's poor live, the proportion in poverty has declined dramatically over the past two decades; however the recent crisis has slowed down this progress. In those developing regions, infant mortality rates have declined. Primary school education has risen in most regions except those in sub-Sahara countries, where less than half of the children are enrolled. Female weakness in education is large in Western and Central Africa, North Africa and South Asia.
