             Because of such strong rivalry, alliances were made between the nations to try and protect each other and back each other up if they ever needed help.
             In 1879, Germany and Austria-Hungary made an alliance. It was called the Dual Alliance. A few years later in 1882, Italy joined the alliance, and it became known as the Triple Alliance.
             Now most of central Europe had joined together. This made France and Russia a little bit nervous, because there was such a strong force right in the centre of everything. So in 1892 they decided to form the Franco-Russian Alliance.
             Now Germany was surrounded by two powerful nations that had formed together. The two groups of alliances became enemies.
             Britain and France are also neighbours, and in 1904 the formed the Entente Cordiale. This was not a military agreement when it was first decided upon, but it slowly became one, as the tensions across Europe began to increase.
             Because of this new agreement between Britain and France, the Triple Entente was formed in 1907 with Russia.
