7th Seal Critical Analysis

             Many science teachers in Kansas are disappointed in how the state voted at the beginning of the school year. They are upset because they must now cut out part of their curriculum that has been present for decades; the teaching of evolution. Members of the board feel that teaching evolution can cause children to doubt their faith (Belluck). They convinced parents it was for the children's benefit. While, some people agree with the board's decision, it still might not have been the best and most beneficial choice.
             Evolution has been a controversial word since the times of Charles Darwin. The thought that apes were distant relatives of humans seemed impossible to most people. The word also contradicts the beliefs of many religions around the world. They do not use the general definition of the word, they just focus on one portion. Evolution is not just applied to the human species, it is the evolution of all plants, animals and organisms on the planet.
             Science teachers are supposed to teach their students what the scientific field believes is true, not the church. Science tries to explain how the world works and how it came to be today, but they cannot incorporate God into their theories. The job of a scientist is to try and explain things logically based on how the world seems to work around him or her, not make claims based on religion . There is no way to prove that God exists, those who believe in Him, do so on faith. This places Him out of the realm of science.
             School is a place for learning about the secular world, at least when attending a public school. It violates the Constitution to bring religion into the classrooms, therefore evolutionary theories are emphasized more often. The New Mexico Board of Education has prohibited the use of Creationism in the classroom, despite the drastic changes to the curriculum in Kansas (Janofsky).
