Fahrenheit 451

             The war. It began and ended in a few seconds. The war was the death for thousands all over the world, and while Montag describes the last few seconds of Mildred's life, he may as well have been describing the death of almost all of the inhabitants of their city. Mildred and Montag had an interesting relationship, one that parallels that of the relationship between the people of the city, and those such as Clarisse, Faber, and the hobos in the country. In the beginning of the novel, most readers would not be able to distinguish any kind of dividing line between Mildred and Guy Montag, yet as the story continues, the line becomes more clear.
             Such as was the story of many of the hobos; Montag at first has no idea of what is in a book. He never pauses to think about what would make books such a threat as to need to burn them. Once he has discovered the knowledge, and freedom of mind that comes with books, it is worth his life to never lose it. Many hobos were driven to the countryside also, and over time developed a web-like system in order to preserve as many books as was possible. They had created their own society, one that the members of cities were not aware of, and would not have understood if they were.
             Mildred's life was very similar to those that most of the citizens lived. Husbands, wives; they meant nothing. The "Family" on the T.V. screens was all that mattered. It was only when Guy turned off the T.V. that Millie and her two friends listened to him. Even then, a discussion of politics only included which of the two candidates was better looking. Mildred never thought she was unhappy, wet always was, because she didn't really know what being happy was. She was told that to be happy, she needs a comfortable house and a four-panel parlor T.V., so she simply believed that she was happy. And when she lost everything except her life, she didn't think of Montag, but of how she lost her "fam...
