Separation of Church and State

             The First Amendment was intended to reaffirm that the Constitution granted no power, either positive or negative to the federal government over religion. Today, this amendment is constantly being dismantled by small incidents, from vouchers for religious schools to prayers at athletic events. Some significant controversial subjects, such as adding creationism theory to public school's science curriculum and President Bush's 'faith-based' project have started uproars in America. If I were to choose an issue to fight for, I would choose to fortify the separation of church and state in the United States.
             When the Constitution was penned in 1776, the founders believed that religion should be between man and his God. Jefferson even included this idea in his Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom, which stated that God created the mind free, and that the government should not influence the way the people should believe. Since then, there has been a laxity in the Constitution.
             In fact, there has been such a laxity, our government has added religious publicity in our pledge and currency, and has given enormous federal grants for religious organizations. If the United States government continues to cogently propagandize religion, a unity of church and state will be inevitable. This absolutely cannot happen. When religion begins to control our government, our freedom will be tremendously reduced, if not lost. A prime example of this is occurring in the Middle East, where freedom is not a given right.
             The Middle East is a place where freedom is non-existent. The leaders of these countries interjected religion into government, consequently, taking away the rights of the citizens. This is unfair to the people because the unification of church and state creates too much government, without an escape to a free-spirited church.
