His most radical dramatic innovation was that "the audience should not be moved. Only after they have left the theatre. Then they should be moved to action." –Brecht. Brecht's plays would periodically distance the audience from characters, as he felt that too much of an emotional connection would minimise the political impact of the drama.
Brecht wanted the audience to be aware of the fact that they were just watching a representation of reality, and not allow themselves to be caught up in an illusion of reality. His distancing effect in a sense amounted to using various techniques, ballads, documentary techniques, and other innovations to make sure actors didn't 'become' their parts, and to remind the audience that it was a production. This is some times referred to as the Verfremungseffekt (spelling debatable!)
