             How Does the Understanding of Time Reflect the Changing Relationship Between the Individual and Society?
             Time is apart of every individual's life, some individuals depend on time, more then other individuals, for example people who work need to get to work at a precise time. In this paper one will answer the question, How does the understanding of time reflect the changing relationship between the individual and society. One will observe three concepts of time, first will be, how time was first recognized by industrial societies, second will be observing the difference between inner time and social time. Third will be observing the changing relationship between individual and society. I will draw on my own personal experiences of social and inner time.
             Back in the medieval times, the church used to regulate time. This was done through prayer, instead of sixty minutes equals one hour. Parts of the day, was put aside for individuals to pray, for example, "matins before dawn, prime at sunrise and none at nine" (Lewis & Bridger p, 46, 2002) it was later developed that none became midday which was then better known as noon. The clock was first invented in the fourteenth century, but clocks were not used like society uses them today, they were just used as status symbols. "The term clock derives from the bell towers which in pre-industrial societies were used to provide signals for the coordination of human activities" (Jury & Jury p, 84, 2000) It was not until 1784 that John Palmer who was an MP for Bath developed a running time table for Britains first public transport.
             In the industrial societies a big clock was put on top of the factory or mills so everyone in the community could be brought together at the same time, an example of this is at the beginning of certain 1930's films, you can see individuals going to work with the sound of a horn which is situated ...
