School Uniforms, 1984 persuasive essay

             One of the most distinct characteristics that separates us from others is the way we express ourselves. Forcing students to wear uniforms posting their personal facts takes away from their freedom of expression. Inviting the whole world into student's private lives is an invasion of privacy. Such actions could be considered violating student's constitutional rights. School uniforms have never been proven to be effective and more problems come with them then solutions.
             True, uniforms may cut down gang activity. But the fact of the matter is gangs are not distinguished solely on what they wear anymore. Eliminating bandannas, "dew rags", and even wearing all one color will not get rid of all gang activity. There are many other ways members make themselves known. For example, one way of claiming who you represent is doing a certain walk. There is the C-walk where the word crip is spelled out on the ground. Another walk is the B-walk where the word blood is presented. Truly, you can't forbid students from walking. In addition, there has only been one scientific study published on the use of uniforms. Despite previous predictions, it was concluded at the end of the study that uniforms did nothing to improve attendance rates and academic goals. Uniforms did not decrease behavioral problems or drug use either. The researches saw that "...wearing uniforms did not lead to improvements in pro school attitudes or increased academic preparation" (inter-net).
             However, students displaying their personal information would be subject to rash decisions and biased opinions. In an environment where many people are quick to judge others right or wrong, there is the threat of pupils being segregated from other students. Students who may have been their friends otherwise.
