Beowulf was written in old English style. It is the oldest epic of British Literature. The epics composed between seventh or eight century. Beowulf is a warrior who comes from Scandinavia. The story is centered on Beowulf, the main character, who goes to Denmark to offer his assistance in fighting off, Grendel, the monster. The character of Grendel is horrible, cruel, and terrified. He is a monster who threatened all the people. In the poem, Grendel is described as " the creature of evil, grim, and fierce". Grendel lives with suffering. He is an unhappy creature. One night, Grendel entered to Heorot hall and killed thirty people. Heorot is threatened. He hates Heorot because Heorot has the things that he does not has. Heorot represents happiness, victory, and joyful but Grendel deserved only suffer.
In addition, Grendel is a supernatural creature. The swords cannot kill him because a spell from dragon protects Grendel. Also, Grendel can enter Heorot hall easily by only touching the door and the door burn out. It is another spell from the dragon. The character of Grendel does not only represent the evil side, but it also represents the human being side. Grendel has the emotion of suffering, jealousy, and weakness when Beowulf attacked him.
