Another year, another chance, another fresh start, another hope for a new beginning. That is what many of us anticipated with the arrival of the new school year. And just as people make resolutions for themselves to fulfill before the turn of the new year, so we made little resolutions for ourselves to live up to. We try to chase those half-hearted wild dreams and all that eludes us, all things we often times cannot grasp, for tradition's sake.
             But really...have we changed?? Is it enough that we set platonic goals for ourselves because tradition states that a new year has dawned and we can start anew? Is it enough that we follow tradition and common belief, not because we really, truly yearn to change? Have we really kept out silent vows by studying harder, turning in projects ahead of time, being more careful with our belongings, being more serious in our craft, fulfilling our potentials? Not really. Because eventually, those brand new G-Tecs you bought and vowed not to lose? You'll misplace them (and probably soon find it in your pen-needy classmate's pocket). You will lose interest in studying. You will forget to do homework. You will cram. You will go back to your old self and realize that you've failed to stay true to your resolutions, shrug it off, and vow to fulfill them the next year.
             The thing is, we look at the new school year and the opportunity to start anew too platonically. Basically, the term "new" is overrated. Just because something's new, be it a new year, new quarter, new whatnot, we presume that it denotes a fresh start, another chance. Much hype and idealism comes with the notion of a new beginning that we fail to realize that that beginning is not granted to us just because a new school year has dawned.We have to earn it. We grant that beginning to ourselves by harboring in us the desire to change and grow from our experiences last year.
