Blade Runner is the story of a future world in which genetically engineered "replicants", artificial life forms designed to be indistinguishable from humans, are used as slave labor on off-world colonies. The only way to distinguish a human from a replicant is to administer a complex psychological test designed specifically to test for emotional responses. Replicants, who have no emotions, respond to the test differently than humans. Because of a recent revolt on an off-world colony, replicants are not allowed on earth. Special police squads known as "Blade Runners" track down and kill any replicant found on earth. The movie focuses on one group of renegade replicants and one Blade Runner, named Deckard, who is pulled out of retirement to kill them.
             In the movie, Scott made relicants represent a disturbing view of the future. The replicants were viewed as slaves that were useless on earth. Although Scott depicts a conflict between science and those who misuse it, Scott offers a peaceful solution. In the movie, Roy and Deckerd were sitting on the roof of an apartment complex. Ironically Roy saved Deckerd's life after he tried to kill him earlier in the film. As they were sitting on the roof Roy was pointing out that he learned so much in his life, but all of his memories would be lost like "tears in the rain." At that point, the audience can see that Roy is really a human in a replicants body.
             Almost everyone in Blade Runner smokes. The impenetrable tobacco haze is an important visual element in many of the interior scenes. It isn't clear, in an age when smoking has become anathema, an almost universal symbol of dissipation and self-contempt, what Scott intends by giving it such pride of place in his vision of the twenty- first century.
