October 14, 1998, first day of basketball tryouts at Nowell High. This day and the four days that followed would change my life on a mental aspect forever. On this rainy day about 25 girls walked into the Nowell gym excitedly to begin the competition. Along with those girls were my cousin and I, whose name was Tina. She was very excited, even though she was a freshman, and this was her first year trying out. As for me it was my first time trying out but I was a sophomore. After going to the locker room and changing, we walked out together, stood on the dim steps that lead from the locker room, took a deep breath, and walked out onto the basketball court, where our dreams awaited. "Are you ready for this," Tina said? "Hey, I've waited for this all my life." I replied. I started to warm-up with some of the other girls, by shooting balls. Tina jogged a couple of times around the court. She really stood out from some of the other girls, because she had on a red pair of track shorts and a tank top on, when most of the girls had on basketball shorts, and a tank top or shirt on. I had on a pair of black basketball shorts and a gray Nike shirt. "It's about time you tried out Crystal." Tiffany stated. She was a medium sized girl with a light brown complexion and dark red hair, and beady brown eyes. "Yea, I felt it was time for me to show my skills," she laughed and so did I. We continued our conversation for about 2 minutes, and then Tina joined us along with some other girls. After about 5 minutes of warming up, the coaches walked in. The lady coach was Coach Shaw, and she was the varsity coach. My cousin and I coach had the male coach, Coach Walker. He was a Caucasian man about 5'7, with black hair, and a full black beard, he looked over weight, but I remember some of the girls saying "Don't let his size fool you into thinking he is not in shape, because he is in great shape....
