Sexual harassment is a term misunderstood and misused by many everyday. This term started to be used more frequently during the 90's and now is a term that is used all too often. In the early 90's many women finally came out and professed that they were being taken advantage of and reaped the "rewards" of being the first too accuse their employers. They received huge cash settlements and new guidelines were put in place to safe guard a company from being brought up on charges of sexual harassment. In the present day companies even hire counselors to train employees in the right and wrong practices of the workplace to avoid lawsuits and other problems. I am glad that this problem is being addressed but on the other hand it is also going to far. Women and men alike sue over someone commenting on how a suit looks on them or how a new dress looks. This is meant in nothing but a complimenting manor but people over react and try to cash in on a harmless comment. This is where judgment should be used. Sexual harassment is a horrible thing to endure but there shouldn't be a set way to deal with sexual harassment. It should go be judged on a case by case basis, therefore it would alleviate the problem of people taking advantage of the system. Comments about clothes shouldn't be taken as harassment if they are meant in a flattering manor, these are only considered harassment if they are used as the beginning of more intense verbal and physical abuse. It is definitely an overrated problem in America today. There are so many cases that are filed each year just to make some money. The problem with the system that is currently in place is that what ever the accuser says is taken as the truth. The person that is accused is considered guilty, he has to prove his innocence in most cases when it should be that the accuser has to prove that the accused is guilty.
