The art of managing can be defined in various terms; it is in my opinion that the most captivating description illustrates the act as "dominating or influencing especially by tact." Although the word dominating may sound domineering or superior, the expression represents an energy or power. A manager who possesses this quality can be an effective motivator and mentor, somebody that others may wish to emulate or simply please. By utilizing this strength a manager can effectively yet tactfully accomplish the company's goals with the support of his or her staff. The success of a manager relies chiefly on his or her perception and application of the four functions of management. Typically the four functions are classified as planning, organizing, leading and controlling. The practice of these steps depends upon the strengths and weaknesses of the individual. When a manager can acknowledge the value of these functions, he or she can in turn begin to nurture and develop the skills necessary to achieve a desired business goal. The following dialogue is an interpretation of the role of planning, organizing, leading and controlling and their impact on the structure of my work environment.
             A secure and prosperous business thrives on management's ability to continually establish and follow through with specific goals. This begins the intricate and thought provoking process of planning. I am employed by a pharmaceutical company, which is owned by a Japanese parent company. We are one of several companies owned by them and to date we generate the highest profit margin. Although our CEO is fairly new to this title, she has been with the company for approximately 18 years. In order to assure her position, she expects productivity from her employees.
