Beatrice asks Benedict to kill Claudio to avenge Hero and he agrees to "challenge him". In a dramatic sense this has the effect of showing the couple's sincerity and depth of feelings towards each other. The audience would find this shocking that Beatrice would have asked Benedict to do such a thing, which would result in anticipation of whether Benedict could actually kill his best friend.
