             Optometrists examine patients' eyes, diagnose diseases and disorders of the eye and associated structures, prescribe and dispense eyeglasses and contact lenses, prescribe therapeutic drugs, and recommend other non-surgical treatments and interventions.

             prescribe eye exercises to achieve accurate and comfortable vision,
             undertake rehabilitative intervention for low vision,
             treat certain eye conditions with therapeutic drugs,
             educate and counsel patients about contact lens care, visual hygiene, lighting arrangements and safety factors, and
             refer patients to other health care professionals when appropriate (e.g. for cataract or laser surgery or when they detect symptoms of systemic disease).
             Optometrists usually work with a receptionist and optometric assistants who complete supervised pre-testing procedures. They work in pleasant office environments. Most of their working time is spent in artificial light.
             Optometrists are usually self-employed and, therefore, can determine their working hours. Some work evenings and weekends to accommodate patients. Once having established a practice, optometrists tend to stay in the same locality for the duration of their careers.
