In Euripides' play Medea, the main character, Medea, was astonished by the fact that Jason, her husband, was to marry the princess of Corinth. She did not hold back her hatred for Jason or Creon's royal family. She wished for the death of Jason, the princess, and Creon and eventually acted upon it after she found a place of refuge from King Aegeus of Athens. At the end of the play, Medea was victorious in her goals to destroy the royal family and Jason. She ended up killing the princess and her father Creon, as well as her two sons and escaped to Athens. The outcome of the play in which Medea died would produce a different response than that of the play where Medea lived.
             When Medea escaped to Athens I felt a sense of bitterness toward her because she got away with murdering four people, including her own two sons. During the climax of the play, Jason ran to save his children from Medea's rage. What made me upset was though he tried to keep her from harming his two sons, he could not arrive in time to spoil Medea's mixed perception of the sin she was committing. By killing her two sons, she only wished to spare them of the torment and anger she felt would be thrust upon them by her husband and the population of Corinth who would not approve of their mother. They would not be respected by this society due to their kinship to Medea and she could not bear the idea that they must suffer thus. The consequences of her problems were pitted upon her children in her mind so in her rage she sought to kill them.
             In reality Medea was being accepted into a society by a man who would be able to provide for her two sons and her. Her perception of Jason's true intent was clouded by her anger over the ill fated marriage that ended. The idea that Jason had left her for another woman yet still sought to care for her was all together too much of a burden upon her morals.
