Ultra Light Helicopters (Popular Science Article Review)
Inventors long promised that a cheap, Easy-to-Fly Helicopter was nigh. (SETH SHULMAN 2002) Elwood Norris found of the AirScooter believes he can over come this problem. A few little set backs leaves his aircraft far from high in the sky. The reason being is the carburetor is malfunctioning which he is going to replace the whole engine to a four stroke. But that's common for most of the inventors it's those unks unks (unknown unknowns) that's the killer. All of the inventor strive to achieve one thing a sturdy, mass-marketable flying machine easy enough for everybody. Keeping it under 254 pounds also is a big factor, FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) requires the aircraft to be lighter than 254 pounds to be considered an ultralight craft. Which means you won't need a pilot's license to operate the aircraft.
Norris' aircraft consists mainly of rubber pontoons, twin-rotor, open cockpit, and an engine. Seems to be the bare essentials but in order to meat the FAA regulations for an ultralight it needed to be. In fact the handle bars looks like they came from a bike, because they were straight from mountain bike. But the projected price is no where near the bare essentials but cheaper than others out on the market. AirScooter Corp. will have its first production by early 2003, and will have a price tag of $25,000 to $50,000. This is about the price of a nice sports car or boat.
The key to making the AirScooter so easy to operate is the two sets of helicopter blades one above the other and two driveshafts rotating opposite to each other. This eliminates gyroscopic torque so you don't need intense concentration and constant corrections.
