Slavery

            African Americans were among the people who were enslaved at the time in the 18th century. Most of the slaves were located in the south. There are three main things that helped the slaves to overcome these troubles of slavery, by no means did they make up for the torture they were put through; however, they did help to pass time. The 3 main things the slaves did to over come these time were, practicing old African pastimes, tricking their masters, and rebelling.
             First, the Africans had to keep there heritage alive by practicing it everyday. They practiced such things as telling old folktales, dance, music, and religion. The folktales they told back then would be considered old ghost stories or stories that teach something, in our time. The dance they did was dances they practiced in their home country before they were removed for slavery. The music they sang was much like the folktales, yet it gave fun and still told the stories, listening to the music is when they did their dances. The major instrument of the time was the molo, which was a stringed instrument similar to the banjo, that mixed with some drums, made great entertainment for the slaves. Many blacks wanted to keep their religion they had when they left home, which is very reasonable because they didn't like the beliefs of the white men. Although some converted, their masters didn't like them to because they believed baptizing would lead to rebellion. So the slaves had no problem keeping their heritage. So they had little entertainment at the time as one can see, yet they made the best of what they had.
             Next, the Africans came up with more subtler ways of subverting slavery. Many of the slaves faked illness, feigned stupidity and laziness, broke tools, and pilfered from storehouses.
