The Titanic

The event when the Titanic sank was devastating. It has been known as a major accident/disaster. Thomas Hardy's poem called "The Convergence of the Twain" about the Titanic was very detailed and well written in the ship's and iceberg's point of view (personification). He describes it this way because it is a different point of view of what most people usually hear.
             * In the first part of the poem, it describes how the ship looks. It describes the ship containing glass windows and doors and mirrors. After this it says, " fishes near gaze at the gilded gear, and query: ' What does this vain gloriousness down here?" (Hardy 13-15) "Gazed at the gilded gear" is an example of alliteration When the fish were swimming on the ocean floor, they see this magnificent large object (ship). They wonder how it ever got to the bottom of the ocean.
             * Another part is when they talk about the ship and iceberg like if they were people. An example of this is " Prepared a sinister mate, for her- so gaily great, A shape of Ice for the time and far and dissociate" (Hardy 19-21). What he means by this is that the ship and the iceberg grew closer together. It was the future nobody is aware of. No one was aware of the ship ever sinking. Another example is "And as the smart ship grew in stature, grace, and hue, in shadowy silent distance grew the iceberg too" (Hardy 22-24). This means that the ship grew in confidence. He thought he had the best ship and that it could never sink and was unsinkable. He ignored all the signs of dangerous icebergs and they did not take the right safety precautions for the ship. He did a good job at describing the whole process of the crash.
             * In this poem, there were examples of different poetry terms. Here are some. "Lie lightness, all their sparkles bleared and black and blind" (Hardy 12), is an example of alliteration. Two examples of personification are "Prepared a sinister mate, for her- so g...
