Description of a Busy Intersection

             A less observant driver may consider a "busy intersection" a traffic light with a high volume of cars racing back and forth. The more objective driver may believe a busy intersection is not necessarily congested with cars; just lots of surrounding events taking place at once. I never thought much about it until I eased up to a yellow traffic light at the corner of fifty-third and thirty-sixth street on a sweltering, humid summer day in September. As I sat, waiting for the light to change, I noticed an old, rusty, lime green 1975 Chevrolet truck sitting next to me. The driver was yelling at his kids as he anxiously waited to pass through this busy intersection. It was then that I began not only to observe busy drivers anxious to pass through a busy intersection, but also the surroundings of this particular street corner.
             This intersection lies in the heart of a small town many believe is just a suburb Tampa, but in fact is considered moderately big to the residents of the town. With absolutely no breeze, it was as if everyone in Bradenton was waiting at this intersection and someone had filled it with unpleasant surroundings. I noticed speeding drivers having no regard for runners taking their usual Saturday jog, discarding half smoked cigarette butts into a deteriorated gutter. At that same instance, I saw a runner in the middle of the street waiting for an elderly woman to make an illegal right turn. The unpleasant smell of exhaust fumes and cigarette smoke provided an odor that would unclog a sick persons nose. Uncut lawns made the street look decades older because the run down gas stations didn't get enough business to provide for lawn maintenance. Eighteen-wheelers tossed up sludge and puffed out thick black smoke as a sudden downpour attacked the intersection. At first sight, one would consider this place the low point of the town.
