American violence

             Violence plays a huge part in American society. In "Videotape" by Don DeLillo, it displays part of the sick and cruel world our parents brought us in to. From movies that we watch to video games that we play, we cannot escape violence. No matter what the consequences are to obtain a rush, America is a leech for thrills.
             "Videotape" is a story about reality. A twelve year old girl is learning how to operate a camera, while driving with her parents in the family car. The girl is shooting the camera aimlessly and innocent, when the lens randomly falls on a stranger in a "medium Dodge." The lens shows "a man in his forties wearing a pale shirt open at the throat." The man is bald up the middle of his head, and seems like a nice guy. The footage is suspenseful and rare. It seems as though something out of the ordinary is going to happen. The twelve year old girl is filming the friendly forty year old man, when bam! The man is shot in the head. This is reality, and the twelve year old girl is flabbergasted filming with a front row seat to witness this brutal murder.
             People in America are so prone to violence in their everyday lives because it is all around them. From TV shows, such as MTV's Jackass, where a bunch of guys do random, stupid, and violent stunts which can severely injure themselves just to make people laugh. Videogames also contribute to violence such as Grand Theft Auto, where you are able to buy guns, steal cars, and kill people for amusement purposes. These type of games and shows attract a young audience so children are being exposed to violence. At this young age children are going to start thinking that it is just a game, mimicking what they see which can result in a catastrophe.
