This also would allow for more slave states, which meant more power for them. In the North, society was based on industry and manufacturing. The North felt the slave system would overtake them, while the South feared the North wanted to remove the slave system. From 1803, forward an economic competition arose with private landowners having mini-wars for land. Slave owners in the South wanted to take the territories to the West so they hired settlers to go in and settle the land. There were many bloody battles that ensued. In 1820, the first attempt was made to solve the uprising problem of slavery. The Compromise of 1820 laid geographical boundaries separating the free states from the slave states. The question of slavery or no slavery was the divisive issue between the North and the South.
