Market conditions in the PC industry
There were an estimated 450 million PCs in worldwide in 2001. Annual sales of PCs were approaching 130 million units annually, which will bring the total number of PCs worldwide to almost 600 million, representing 10% of the earth's total population. In fact, industry experts estimate that the installed base of PCs would exceed one billion units (almost one computer for every six people on earth).
Economical problems around the world and their effect on computer technology demand
Prior to 1997, a strong Asian economy led to high PC demand. However, from 1997 to the present day, economic woes plagued a number of Asian countries, resulting in declining PC sales. Ironically, China was the last Asian country to suffer from this problem. Despite the need for new technology the condition of an increasing market with substantial potential followed by a period of decline in demand is echoed in many other parts of the world, including Latin America.
Despite all the negative numbers, we anticipate a recovery in PC demand and for the industry as a whole due to a rapid increase in corporate Internet use and E-commerce technologies. In addition, industry recovery will be aided by the utilization of computer programs in schools and by the strides towards continually increasingly the user friendliness of Internet access.
Lower prices and emerging markets, primarily developing countries, will also be a huge contributor to the prosperity of the industry.
It is valid to say that the computer industries there are only a few competitors. Dell, Gateway, IBM, Compaq/HP and Apple are the main rivals in the industry, and the competition is fierce.
Dell and Gateway have been the most innovative by including the "just in time" manufacturing to meet consumers' specific needs.
