When something is over, is it really over?
"Oh, Justin," I had said," We could have had such a good time together."
"Yes," he had responded. "Isn't it pretty to think so?"
It was a beautiful summer night, like any other, and I was on my way to see Justin. It had been decided that we would meet at Mezamis Deux, a local coffee house in the heart of the city. I had sped there, anticipating his smile that curls and collapses on his lips. We had sat outside, though I am not sure I remember what words were exchanged all that much over our frappicinos. Afterwards, we were walking out to our cars across the parking lot when Justin decidedly mentioned, "I think we should break up." Feeling nauseated and unable to object, I had turned toward him with what I am sure must have been a startled look on my face. My eyes were only met with a gaze already far removed and separate.
Not being one to approach, I let him cut me off completely-telling myself that I would be just fine. I told myself this was surely not the end of our relationship, this cannot be completely over yet. That night had ended with a goodbye so monstrous and final, yet I cannot help but wonder if it would be the last goodbye. It was distressing, now I wish I could have saved a remnant of our relationship, maybe then the transition would have been easier. As it is, I can only hope I remember him fairly accurately. Exactly a month and a half has passed, and I am not yet willing to settle into the routine of school, work, and everything without Justin.
Is something such as this ever resolved, or is it a circle we only run around? Maybe the dating process like the saying "Friends come and go". I only wish that you would tell me what you wanted to hear. Let me do the right thing, let me do the wrong thing and if it is ever this clear, I will only say it once.
