             On August 31, 1989, Nikki gave birth to her first son Thomas Watson Giovanni. Her experience as a single mother began to influence her poetry. In 1971, she published her first children's poetry book entitled Spin a Soft Black Song. During the 1970's loneliness and family affection became increasingly important themes in her poetry. Throughout her career she has published six different poetry books for children. In 1989 Nikki Giovanni also published Gemini, this book is a collection of autobiographical essays.
