             Folklore is a popular trend in many societies. One reason for its popularity is because there are no rules for its creation. Folklore is neither good nor bad. Olrik states that, "... folklore must be measured by its own laws, not the laws of everyday life. Folklore does not have to obey any laws but its own"(140). He continues, "Folklore, because of its excessively rigid adherence to recurring forms and themes, makes excellent source material for those interested in discovering principles controlling human culture generally"(128).
             Even in today's society, it is difficult to listen to the stories being told. The stories being told today are the stories of our families. These stories are not only a tool needed to understand our past, but also a tool needed to represent our role in society. Gail Caldwell spoke with Morrison about this particular novel. When asked about the stories being told in this novel, Morrison replied by saying, "People give a lot of credence to the intelligence, the concentration, the imagination necessary for listening to music, but never for listening to stories. That somehow seems like a dumb thing that people who can't read do. And I know how hard it is to listen, and what's engaged when you listen"(Caldwell, 243). Morrison later on in the conversation explains that she was unsure of what to do with the magic. "It wasn't only mine, but I didn't have any literary precedent for what I was trying to do with the magic"(243).
