the dog on our retina (sensation) yet my friend perceived the dog as being threatening due to being bitten by a similar dog not long ago. I perceived the dog as being friendly and playful because I grew up with a dog as a household pet. This illustrates the ways in which two people can perceive the same stimuli due to prior experience.
In order to fully be able to make sense of our surroundings our brain unconsciously applies visual perception principles. There are three categories of these principles - perceptual constancy's, Gestalt's principles and depth cues. Visual perception principles are applied to the information received unconsciously and automatically as they are present from early childhood.
