Fairest Queen the Queen appears in the form of yet another famous gay icon: drag queen Quentin Crisp. Potter's choice of casting is a satirical criticism of gender constructions and misinterpretation. Potter may have been referring to Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussere's linguistic theory of the signifier and the signified. This theory can be applied to Crisp's casting as the word queen signifies both the orthodox royal image and the postmodern concept of queer gender identities: that of a drag queen.
