Anne Frank

             A thirteen year old girl begins to write a diary because she finds it difficult to confide in her friends. She continues to write for more than two years, while suddenly confined to a small apartment annex, because writing the diary helps her to sort out her thoughts about the future and fears about the dangerous and unfriendly world outside. Forced into hiding and isolation and living in constant fear and deprivation, Anne observes and records the best and the worst traits that war brings out in people around her, while trying to understand her own strengths and weaknesses.
             Anne Frank always felt a bit lonely and misunderstood. When she first got her diary, she wrote in it: "I hope I will be able to confide everything to you, as I have never been able to confide in anyone, and I hope you will be a great source of comfort and support." She had many friends and was pretty popular but could not share her true feelings either with her close friends nor her mother or sister, Margot. She felt very connected to her father and looked up to him for support and encouragement, but she could not open up to him about her "girly" stuff. As most teenagers she was very concerned with her own feelings, while underestimating what her mother and sister were going through. She felt resentment toward them. She started a friendship with Peter, which helped both of them to feel less lonely. In her search for affection from others, Anne did not realize that Margot could be jealous that she did not turn to her, but instead found another confidant.
             Anne's interest in Peter helped her to open up to another person. They had many discussions. Peter, who also was not used to confiding in others, told Anne he was sorry to be born a Jew and, although he did not want to become a Christian, he wanted to make sure no one knew he was Jewish after the war.
