Co-dependency

             Advocates recognize codependency as a psychological disease that can manifest into physical complications. While opponents view it as a bunch of psychological jargon that Americans have categorized themselves into to excuse their irresponsible behaviors. I feel we must have a basic definition of codependency before considering the following research and opinions. There are many varied definitions but to standardize to some extent the meaning of this term Beattie says it best, ¡§A person who has let someone else¡s behavior affect him or her in a negative way and is obsessed with controlling the other person¡s behavior¡ (31).
             Codependency began within the substance abuse recovery programs in the 1980s with the recognition that not only alcoholics but also the families of alcoholics required treatment. Using a modified AA 12-step program, Codependency Anonymous groups grew rapidly to assist family members affected by chemical dependency. Starting in the mid-1980s, the concept of codependency was extended to anyone who was involved in dysfunctional relationships.
             Codependents are referred to as a caretaker, enabler, or rescuer. The counter dependents are referred to as an addict or abuser. An abuser is any individual that is addicted to a compulsive destructive behavior that affects the quality of life in a negative way. The way this relationship works is the abuser is addicted

             to a compulsive behavior that is extremely destructive. In this behavior, the abuser¡s action are so extreme they cause some form of a crisis which usually involves losing a job, being arrested, physical and/or mental abuse on the family members, friends and etc...
