Sociological imagination is the ability to see the relationship between individual experiences and the larger society (Sociology in Our Times, Diana Kendall, third edition, p. 3). The movie I chose to show sociological imagination is "Two Can Play That Game." I watched this movie on September 3, 2002 at home while sitting on my couch taking notes. The movie was made in 2001. The reason I chose this movie is because I think it's the best way to demonstrate sociological imagination as pertaining to my age group and also because it deals with relationship experiences and problems.
This movie is about this young woman in the advertising business, who thinks she has her life and her man completely under control. She is in a relationship with a young handsome lawyer until one night when the "girls" stumbled upon her boyfriend at a nightclub with another woman. She believes that there are ten rules to follow to get her man back. While she is trying to get her man back she is also giving advice to her girlfriends about their relationships.
There are two different issues due to sociological imagination; the first being personal issues and the second being social or public issues. Shante Smith is the main character's name who helps her friends while trying to figure out her own relationship. Her personal problems start when she finds out her man, Keith, is at the nightclub with another girl but in the movie she specifically says' "do not tell your girlfriends when you are having man troubles because all they will do is interfere and give you the wrong advice." Which in my case and other girls cases is true, when you are having problems with your man do not tell your girlfriends because they will interfere.
