Paul is aware that their differences drive them together, but it is also what drives them apart when he thinks about the disaster of a marriage his mother and father are going through. Paul has never met anybody like Miriam who is so passionate and thoughtful. The attraction escalates because she is nothing like Paul. This is what bring's them together but it is going to be the same thing that drives them apart. Miriam does everything in her power to show her love for Paul. Paul however is the one that is driving the relationship away. He can be very lovable and charismatic to her, but he can also show his dark side by being very cruel and condescending towards her. It has gotten to the that extreme that Miriam has tried to cope with his temper change. She would wait until he was "jolly and as she put it flippant." S
