THE AMERICAN AND DUTCH SYSTEMS OF TERTIARY EDUCATION:
             There are many similarities between the systems of American and Dutch tertiary education. To give a first example, in both the US and in the Netherlands the educational system is as such that in three or four years, a Bachelor's title can be earned, and with an extra one or two years, a Master's title. More specifically, both systems prepare their students for a professional career or for research, as a graduate or a research student, respectively. Furthermore, the universities in both countries are institutions that carry on research themselves. The systems of tertiary education in the US and the Netherlands would hence not appear to be different at first sight. However, the differences between these two systems outweigh the similarities.
             A first difference that can be observed is that the number of faculties of a university in the United States is a lot coll. - ¼ (much) larger than that of a standard (are there any others? - ¼) Dutch university. While Dutch universities only offer courses in a limited number of subjects, US universities strive to offer their students courses in every subject imaginable, in order to prepare every student for a job in the subject of their choice, and hence provide society with educated persons at every level. Where Dutch students are provided with the usual courses in, for example, physics or the English language, in the US students can follow subjects ranging from the usual to the extraordinary, the course "Intermediate Composition and Disney Studies" taught at Wayne University in Detroit being only a single example of the latter.
