Since the idea of democracy has become common all over the world, People began to realize that a part of democracy is equality: between black and white, between religions and also between men and women.
In order to bring it into our life, equality between men and women has become a part of the law in many places around the world. Yet it seems that still, this equality is not complete.
One of the more obvious places where equality doesn't apply is the army. In the army, men are valued more then women, there are more men the women, men serve much longer in the army, and women are rarely accepted to combat units. This happens because people believe that women cannot endure as much pain and pressure as men can. This has never been proven, but still it accepted as a reason amongst our society.
Another place where discrimination between men and women is obvious is the religion: In all three religions of the world, a woman is valued mainly for her ability to give birth to children, raise them, and take care of her husband. All this while the husband is the provider, the head of the family, the one who makes the decisions.
One of the reasons for this discrimination is rooted in our past. The function of a man and a woman in the family according to the religions is based on the functions they had in the past. In ancient times, the man was the one who went hunting and was responsible for the family's survival, while the woman was responsible for what we today call the "household".
Last, but not least, is the discrimination at work places. Every survey ever made about the salaries of men and women shows that a woman in the same position as a man, is paid less then that man, not to mention the fact that generally, there are much less women in management positions.
