A young boy is sent to Buliwyf and his men, to ask for help from Hrothgar, king of the Northmen, against the Wendols. The Wendols were committing a crime against the Northmen, killing many of the townspeople, then gnawing on their dead bodies. As defined in The Art of being Human, the Wendols were committing a crime, because they felt as though they were on "a mission (often dictated by God or extraterrestrial beings) to improve the world by killing "evil-doers.""(Janaro 9) When Buliwyf and twelve other men decide to go and help, they become known as the thirteen warriors. Together, they help to stop the Wendols and save Hrothgar and his people.
             In a similar plot, the story of Beowulf, which shows the balance between fate and freewill, the character Beowulf proves also to be a hero. He was a young nobleman of the Geats, and a people of southern Sweden. Beowulf demonstrates chivalry, serving his lord, by rescuing the royal house of Denmark from two violent monsters, then returns to rule his people for fifty years. In the end,
             Beowulf lost his life in a battle to defend the Geats from a dragon's rampage. In both plots, the Northmen and Beowulf prove to be heroes, due to their bravery and courage, to do what is right, and save people from an evil being, even if it means that they may lose their life.
             In The 13th Warrior, Buliwyf and his men leave their homes in hopes to defend Hrothgar and his people. They were defined as heroes to the Northmen, because without them, the town never would have survived. The thirteen warriors knew of the danger upon going in to battle, they knew that it was a great risk to them, and their lives. But, they did not care. To the Vikings, to die in a battle, defending the lives of others, was considered to be a noble thing, it made you a wealthy human being.
