Odour of Chrysenthemums

             The vivid point of view in D.H Lawrence's "Odour Of Chrysenthemums" is fundamental to the success with which Hemmingway has portrayed the complex network of feelings within the Bates household, especially that of the wife, Elizabeth who is trapped in a strained and loveless marriage with a drunkard. In the following narrative, Lawrence also portrays aspects of the life he knew as a boy in the coal mining village where he was born, as it parallels the unhappy married life of Lawrence's father and mother. Through the use of other narrative conventions such as the setting, expert characterization and the impassive selection of detail, encircled by the impersonal point of view, Hemmingway achieves in embodying the reader's sympathy towards Elizabeth Bates.
             The setting of this story plays an integral part in readers being able to understand the actions and the feelings of the main characters. In the text, the English countryside is divided between industrial and rural landscapes. The manner in which Lawrence utilizes these landscapes as a means by which to shape the main characters in his short story illustrates his inherent ability to successfully differentiate between industrial and rural characterization. Elizabeth was brought up from a middle-class family while her husband was of a working-class background, thus involving a conflict of attitudes and values between them. Hemmingway describes the mining village, "Miners, single, trailing and in groups, passed like shadows diverging home. At the edge of the ribbed level of sidings squats a low cottage....a large bony vine clutched at the house as if to claw down the tiled roof....there was some twiggy apple trees....ragged cabbages.
