Item number one on most students' list of worries is probably making good grades. But
as most of them can tell you, this is much easier said than done. Making above average grades
can come a little easier, however, when a certain process is followed in and out of the classroom.
If you're struggling to pass a class, going to the lectures, taking good notes, and developing good
study habits can ensure that your grades will greatly improve.
The first step seems easy enough, but can prove to be the hardest for some students -
actually showing up for the class. With no one to push you out of bed, getting up and going to
class can become difficult. Every student should try to attend all classes, however, because there
are things you will get out of an in-person lesson that you won't get from a friend's notes or a
handout: special instructions from your teacher, notification of due date changes, and being able
to write your own notes are a few examples. Attending class is the foundation that good note
taking and study skills are based upon, and should be taken advantage of at every opportunity.
The next skill for making the grades is being able to take good notes. Writing down the
lesson's important points, as well as lesser details, for later reference will be a helpful memory
jog when studying for an exam. Facts that seem unimportant during the lesson can prove to be
vital later on, so it is best to write down everything. Also, note taking during the lesson will
enable you to study material that may be on a test but isn't in the textbook. You also have the
advantage of writing down the lesson in your own words, so it will be easier to understand later
on. The better notes you have, the more you will get out of your studying, the last step in
This final key to achieving above average grades is developing the right study habits.
