balanced distribution, is the growing use of GM crops. Crops such as
maize and potatoes are being engineered with genes from the soil organism Bacillus
thuringiensis (Bt). This causes the crops to produce a chemical which is toxic to most
pests. The problem here, Brian Halweil expresses, is that there is already evidence that
pests over time begin to resist the chemicals that we spray on our crops, so wide-scale use
of the Bt crops is similar in that eventually the pests will become resistant to the toxic
chemical produced by the crop. Brian says, "It's like the plant equivalent of treating
antibiotics like vitamins" (142). Eventually the new plants will be rendered useless and
farmers will be forced to use more pesticides on there already chemical saturated crops.
Crops are now being sought after to produce known medicines to help cut the cost
of traditional production methods. Medicine is typically not used on healthy people, but
instead a select group in hopes to help the sick. Other treatments, such as vaccines, the
goal is to treat the healthy in order to prevent the sick. A new and innovated way to
vaccinate people was published in an article by the University of Chicago press:
