Natural cycle is the removal of one single egg cell during the natural monthly cycle of a female, however, natural cycle IVF has largely been abandoned in favour of stimulated cycles (superovulation - use of fertility drugs) as a means of improving success rates by transfer of multiple embryos. The medical and scientific advances that have evolved out of IVF over the past 22 years are dramatic. In particular, the use of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
             ICSI is a recent development associated with IVF which allows the sperm to be directly injected in to the egg. This is used for sperm, which has problems penetrating the egg, and results in success rates equal to or higher than normal fertilisation.
             Gamete Intra Fallopian Transfer (GIFT) is a similar procedure to IVF, which place harvested eggs and sperm straight in to the fallopian tubes where it is hoped they will fertilise naturally.
             The constant advances in technology have provided IVF with ongoing support and reputation for providing needy couples with the opportunity to fulfil a dream, which would otherwise not be possible.
