Political Socialization and The Environment

Australia, tribes in New Guinea and the Amazon. Yet, since the age of industrialization people have lost their respect and relation with the environment and placed their faith in technology. People have moved from nurturing and being nurtured from the environment to destroying the air and water and stripping the earth of its resources one by one. For example, the imperialist movement in Europe yielded the extinction of numerous animals and even native tribes, as well as slashing forests, strip mining and the squandering of natural wealth. Nothing was offered to conserve and protect the environment until the later part of the 19th century when the first national parks were established in America, England and Germany and thus began the conservationist movement. The conservationists were alarmed at the wasteful destruction caused by imperialism across the world and wished to preserve nature for the enjoyment of future generations and also to extend the utilization of natural resources. They launched the first efforts to control pollution as well as effort to protect animals. They took wild animals and propagated them for harvest as developed fish hatcheries and preserved natural habitats. It is from this environmental movement that modern people get the basis for environmental socialization. From this movement regulations were placed on the air, water and land pollution and the health dangers of pollution were recognized and brought to the attention of the developed world's population.
             The government and political leaders often do not support environmental issues because environmental regulations hurt the big business leaders that support the government and politicians "business corporations which typically emphasize production and acquiring wealth, uphold values that conflict with environmentalism."
